Artisans

In 2019, Cuenca\’s candidacy for the title of Diverse Craft City of the World was submitted to the World Crafts Council, for which ten samples of the city\’s most important craft manifestations – fundamental elements of its cultural identity – were attached.

A few months later, during the commemoration of Cuenca\’s independence – the time of the year of the greatest craft festivals – an examining jury sent by the World Crafts Council visited the city to assess the quality of handicraft production, whose richness is patent in so many fairs and festivals, such as the Traditional Otorongo Fair and the Crafts of America Festival, among others. The group of experts had the chance to visit several workshops, both in urban and rural Cuenca, verifying how common, transversal and omnipresent handicrafts are in our city.

On November 17, 2020 the World Crafts Council recognizes Cuenca as the first diverse Artisan City in Latin America and declares it as “World Craft City”. Its celebration commemorates this date with great recognition to its main actors, artisans and artisans of the town.

Conoce a los artesanos

This recognition is based on the impact that craft trades have on the activation of the social, cultural, academic, economic and productive fabric of the city. The declaration recognizes the artisanal legacy of the territory and its projection over time as an activity that builds and renews the material heritage and protects the local intangible heritage.
